Dave Collins had 2 base hits and 4 RBI as the California Angels defeated the
Minnesota Twins by a score of 8 to 1 at Metropolitan Stadium.

Nolan Ryan(5-11) delivered a fine performance for California. He went 7
innings surrendering 7 hits and 5 walks. Although they lost, Minnesota did
out-hit California 11 to 8.

Ryan got help from Chuck Hockenbery who earned his 1st save. Jim Hughes(8-5)
suffered the loss. He allowed 6 runs and 5 hits in 8 and 1/3 innings.

OAKLAND AT CHICAGO

Jim Kaat was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete
game as the Chicago White Sox topped the Oakland A's by a score of 6 to 1 at
Comiskey Park.

Chicago brought 5 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 7th inning when
they had 4 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Brian Downing
who made the home-town crowd a happy bunch when he caught a hold of a
fastball for a Grand Slam homerun (his 1st of the season). Chicago totaled 9
hits on the afternoon.

Kaat(9-5), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. Dick
Bosman(2-7) was tagged with the loss. The Chicago ballclub's record now
stands at 39-37. Oakland has a record of 49-29 after the loss.

BOSTON AT MILWAUKEE

Carlton Fisk collected 3 extra-base hits and had 2 RBI and Roger Moret carried
a no-hitter into the 8th inning as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Milwaukee
Brewers by the score of 9 to 0 at County Stadium.

Moret(2-3) was virtually untouchable. He allowed just 1 hit and 2 walks in 9
innings reducing his ERA from 3.89 to 3.13. The left-handed Moret lost his
chance for a no-hitter when Don Money singled with two outs in the 8th
inning. Boston dominated offensively as they scored in 6 different innings.

Jim Slaton(7-6) was given the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 6
runs in 5 and 2/3 innings.

KANSAS CITY AT TEXAS

Left fielder Mike Hargrove had 3 base hits as the Texas Rangers beat the
Kansas City Royals in 11 innings by a score of 6 to 5.

The score was knotted at 5 after nine innings. Texas won it in the 11th
inning. Roy Smalley drew a walk. Jim Sundberg got his turn next, but he was
a strikeout victim. One out later, Mike Cubbage came to the plate and hit a
single. Hargrove stepped in and he singled giving Texas the victory and
sending the 19,139 home-town fans home happy. Both teams totaled 12 hits on
the night.

Steve Foucault(1-0) went 3 and 1/3 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. The
loss was charged to Doug Bird(2-1) in relief. He allowed 6 hits and 1 walk
in 4 and 1/3 innings.

Left fielder Roy White connected with a 'big fly' and had 3 RBI and George
Medich completed the game without help from the bullpen at Municipal Stadium
as the New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians by the count of 5 to
2.

New York took the lead for good in the top of the 2nd inning scoring 2 runners
on 4 hits. New York had 11 hits for the night.

Medich(14-5) was the winner allowing 2 runs for the game. The losing pitcher
was Don Hood(2-4). When questioned, Bill Virdon remarked, 'It's been a while
since a win felt this good - heck, it's been a while since we had a win
period!'

Mark Belanger had 4 hits and 4 RBI and Mike Cuellar went the distance as the
Baltimore Orioles beat the Detroit Tigers by a score of 11 to 4.

Belanger had a big evening at the plate. He slapped a base-hit which was good
for two runs in the 2nd inning, delivered a single in the 4th inning, lined a
one-base hit in the 6th inning and lifted one out of the park for a two run
home run (his 1st of the season) in the 9th inning. Baltimore had a total of
13 hits for the game.

The victory was credited to Cuellar(7-9) who went the distance, allowing 4
runs. Joe Coleman(2-11) took the loss. He gave up 5 runs and 8 hits in 6
innings.
