Rick Reuschel pitched a complete game as the Chicago Cubs beat the New York
Mets by a score of 7 to 2.

Chicago scored 4 runs in the top of the 6th inning. The crucial at-bat was
provided by George Mitterwald who silenced the crowd when he lofted a
three-run 'big-fly' (his 2nd of the season). Chicago had 7 hits for the
afternoon.

The win was credited to Reuschel(10-8) who went the whole way allowing 2 runs.
Jerry Koosman(5-8) took the loss. He gave up 6 runs and 4 hits in 7 innings.

PITTSBURGH AT MONTREAL

The Pittsburgh Pirates edged the Montreal Expos at Jarry Park by the score of
4 to 3.

Dave Giusti(3-4) came on to close the door tight in relief. He didn't allow
much, just 3 hits and 1 walk in 5 innings improving his ERA from 2.81 to
2.43. Although they lost, Montreal did out-hit Pittsburgh 10 to 6.

Steve Rogers(6-8) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 6 hits and 3 walks in 8
innings.

Steve Yeager had 3 base hits at Dodger Stadium as the San Francisco Giants
lost a heartbreaker to Los Angeles Dodgers by the score of 3 to 2.

The deciding run was scored by Los Angeles in the bottom of the 9th. After an
out was recorded, John Hale singled, and an error was also committed. Yeager
came to the plate and laced a single giving Los Angeles the win much to the
delight of the home town crowd. Los Angeles had just 6 hits for the night.

The win went to Al Downing(2-1) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. The losing
pitcher was Pete Falcone(4-9). He gave up 6 hits and 4 walks in 8 and 1/3
innings.

Tom Underwood completed the game without help from the bullpen as the
Philadelphia Phillies outscored the St. Louis Cardinals 4 to 2.

Philadelphia took the lead off Bob Gibson in the first inning when they scored
2 runs on 2 hits. The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither
team was able to score again.

Underwood(5-9) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. Gibson(3-9)
was tagged with the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 4 runs in 3
innings.

The San Diego Padres nipped the Cincinnati Reds in 11 innings 3 to 2 at Jack
Murphy Stadium in a hard fought contest.

Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings. San Diego came out
on top in the 11th inning. Hector Torres stroked a one-base hit. Hernandez
was safe on a stolen base. After an out was recorded, John Grubb stepped in
and he laced a base-hit making San Diego the victors to the delight of the
home town faithful. San Diego ended up with 10 hits for the game while
Cincinnati had 7.

Dave Tomlin(4-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing
no runs. Pedro Borbon(4-7) was charged with the loss in relief.
