In a close game it was the Philadelphia Phillies 5, the Cincinnati Reds 3 at
Riverfront Stadium.
Cincinnati was unable to claim the lead after Philadelphia went ahead in the
3rd inning scoring 2 runners on 2 hits. The key offensive moment was
provided by Jay Johnstone who deflated the crowd as he popped a two-run clout
over the fence (his 4th of the season). Cincinnati had a chance in the 9th
but they came up short.
Tom Underwood(6-9) got the win allowing 3 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings. Underwood
got relief help from Gene Garber who gained credit for his 6th save. Gary
Nolan(8-6) suffered the loss. He allowed 5 runs and 8 hits in 6 and 2/3
innings.
'We won because we did the little things right.' Danny Ozark said after the
game. 'This is why we practice things over and over and over, so when we get
in close games we don't make mistakes.'
