Phil Niekro delivered 9 solid innings and he had 2 base hits as the Atlanta

Braves outscored the slumping Montreal Expos 2 to 0.



Atlanta went ahead for good in the top of the 5th inning scoring a single run.

Niekro reached on an error. After an out was recorded, Marty Perez stepped

up to the plate and he stroked a single. Darrell Evans then would hit into a

force play scoring the run. Atlanta rapped out 8 hits for the afternoon.



It was the 2nd shutout of the year for Niekro(5-2). Steve Renko(1-2) was

charged with the loss. 'I've been working on a few things in my delivery,

and I think I'm hitting a good groove.' Niekro said after the game. 'I'm

ready to start another game tomorrow!'

Jose Cruz had 3 base hits and scored 3 times as the Houston Astros defeated

the Chicago Cubs 7 to 1 at Wrigley Field.



J.R. Richard(6-1) earned his pay with a solid performance for Houston. He

surrendered 1 hit and 4 walks in 7 innings reducing his ERA from 2.85 to

2.65. Houston had 15 hits for the game and Chicago had 4.



The loss was charged to Rick Reuschel(4-3). He allowed a few too many

baserunners giving up 11 hits and 3 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings.

One run was the difference at Veterans Stadium as the Philadelphia Phillies

defeated the Cincinnati Reds in 11 innings 5 to 4.



Both teams were tied at 4 runs apiece after nine innings. Philadelphia won

the game in the 11th inning. Garry Maddox lined a single. Greg Luzinski

stepped up next and he ripped a base-knock. After an out was recorded, Mike

Schmidt stepped in and he stroked a one-base hit to load the bases. Bob

Boone was up next and he smacked a single giving Philadelphia the victory and

sending the 32,721 home-town fans home happy. Philadelphia finished with 14

hits while Cincinnati ended up with 9.



The winning pitcher was Tom Hilgendorf(2-1) who allowed no runs in 3 innings.

Will McEnaney(2-2) suffered the loss in relief. He pitched 3 innings and

surrendered 8 hits and no walks.

The Philadelphia Phillies edged the Cincinnati Reds at Veterans Stadium by the

score of 5 to 4.



Philadelphia tallied 3 runs in the 7th inning with the help of 4 hits. The

critical plate appearance was by Greg Luzinski who brought the crowd to their

feet when he doubled which was good for two runs. Philadelphia had 13 hits

for the night while Cincinnati had 8.



Gene Garber(2-2) went 3 and 2/3 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Pedro

Borbon(2-4) ended up with the loss in relief. This win by Philadelphia

continues their recent hot streak. In their last ten games, they have a

record of 8-2. For the season, they are 17-14. With this loss, Cincinnati
