Atlanta went ahead for good in the top of the 5th inning scoring a single run. Niekro reached on an error. After an out was recorded, Marty Perez stepped up to the plate and he stroked a single. Darrell Evans then would hit into a force play scoring the run. Atlanta rapped out 8 hits for the afternoon. It was the 2nd shutout of the year for Niekro(5-2). Steve Renko(1-2) was charged with the loss. 'I've been working on a few things in my delivery, and I think I'm hitting a good groove.' Niekro said after the game. 'I'm ready to start another game tomorrow!' J.R. Richard(6-1) earned his pay with a solid performance for Houston. He surrendered 1 hit and 4 walks in 7 innings reducing his ERA from 2.85 to 2.65. Houston had 15 hits for the game and Chicago had 4. The loss was charged to Rick Reuschel(4-3). He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 11 hits and 3 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings. Both teams were tied at 4 runs apiece after nine innings. Philadelphia won the game in the 11th inning. Garry Maddox lined a single. Greg Luzinski stepped up next and he ripped a base-knock. After an out was recorded, Mike Schmidt stepped in and he stroked a one-base hit to load the bases. Bob Boone was up next and he smacked a single giving Philadelphia the victory and sending the 32,721 home-town fans home happy. Philadelphia finished with 14 hits while Cincinnati ended up with 9.
