Mike Cuellar went the distance at Oakland Co Stadium where the Baltimore
Orioles beat the Oakland A's by the score of 3 to 1.

Baltimore did all of it's offensive work in the 5th inning scoring 3 runners
on 4 hits. Oakland had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.

The victory went to Cuellar(4-5) who went the distance allowing 1 run. Ken
Holtzman(7-3) was tagged with the loss. He pitched 9 innings allowing 6 hits
and 3 walks.

Bucky Dent had 2 base hits as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Milwaukee
Brewers by the score of 2 to 0 at County Stadium.

Chicago jumped on top to stay in the 5th inning scoring a single run using 2
hits. Jim Kaat(6-3) got help from Cecil Upshaw who pitched a perfect ninth
and was credited with his 4th save.

Jim Colborn(0-3) absorbed the loss. Chicago now has a record of 23-18. Not
able to get much going in recent weeks, Milwaukee is 1-9 of late and now has
an overall record of 16-23.

CLEVELAND AT CALIFORNIA

The California Angels defeated the Cleveland Indians by a score of 4 to 1 at
Anaheim Stadium.

Frank Tanana(4-3) was very good in the win. He allowed only 5 hits and 2
walks in 7 and 1/3 innings. Tanana recorded 8 strikeouts seeing his ERA drop
from 2.53 to 2.27. California had 8 hits for the afternoon while Cleveland
had 5.

Tanana got relief help from Don Kirkwood who gained credit for his 1st save.
Fritz Peterson(1-5) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 6 and 2/3 innings and
surrendered 7 hits and 4 walks.

Bob Darwin hit 2 doubles and Bill Campbell tossed a complete game as the
Minnesota Twins topped the Detroit Tigers by a score of 6 to 2 at Tiger
Stadium.

Minnesota came up with 3 runs in the top of the 2nd inning when they had 5
base hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Campbell(2-1) and
Minnesota. That was all the run support Campbell required. Minnesota
totaled 12 hits on the night.

Vern Ruhle(2-5) was given the loss. His ERA ballooned from 4.28 to 4.61 as he
allowed 6 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings.

George Medich pitched 10 strong innings and center fielder Elliott Maddox had
2 base hits at Royals Stadium as the New York Yankees beat the Kansas City
Royals in 10 innings 2 to 1.

The score was knotted at zero after nine innings. New York was victorious in
the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Jim Mason was the sparkplug when
he smacked a single. Sandy Alomar was next and he drew a walk. Bobby Bonds
then drew a walk to load the bases. Maddox followed and he stroked a
base-hit which scored a run. Lindy McDaniel then uncorked a wild pitch
scoring the final run of the inning. Both teams totaled 5 hits on the night.

The winning pitcher was Medich(9-2) who allowed 1 run for the game. Dennis
Leonard(1-3) was charged with the loss. New York continued their winnings
ways improving their record to a division leading 30-10. They are 8-2 in
their last ten games. Jack McKeon was unhappy with his club's recent
performance. 'We can't keep losing games' he said. 'It gets to be
embarrassing after a while.'

Bill Fahey had 4 hits at Arlington Stadium as the Texas Rangers beat the
Boston Red Sox in 12 innings by the count of 5 to 4.

Both teams were tied at 4 runs apiece after nine innings. Finally, Texas
pulled the game out in the 12th inning. After an out was recorded, Jim
Spencer stroked a single, and an error was also committed. Toby Harrah came
next and he lined a single making Texas the winners and sending the 21,742
fans home happy. Boston was out-hit by Texas, 14 hits to 8.

The winning pitcher was Stan Thomas(2-2) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. The
loss was charged to Roger Moret(0-1) in relief. The Texas ballclub's record
now stands at 23-19. With this loss, Boston has a 4-6 record of late, 18-20
overall.
