Shortstop Tim Foli had 3 base hits and 4 RBI at Jack Murphy Stadium as the

Montreal Expos beat the slumping San Diego Padres 10 to 8.



San Diego was unable to claim the lead after Montreal went ahead in the top of

the 4th inning with 2 runs. After an out was recorded, Larry Biittner began

the rally when he drew a walk. Biittner swiped second base. Bob Bailey then

drew a walk. After another out, Foli came to the plate and slapped a

base-hit resulting in a run. Foli took second on the throw. Steve Rogers

stepped into the box and drew a walk to load the bases. Pepe Mangual kept

things alive and drew a walk scoring the final run of the inning. San Diego

threatened in the 9th but Montreal was able to put down the rally.



Rogers(6-5) went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 5 runs for the victory. Chuck

Taylor was credited with his 4th save. Dave Freisleben(1-11) was the loser.

He was touched for 10 hits and 6 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.



'I had a little blister on my index finger before the game, but I thought it

was nothing.' Rogers said. 'I was lucky I got a win because I couldn't put

the ball where I wanted it.'

With the crowd on their collective feet, screaming at the top of their lungs,

San Francisco Giants rallied to top Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 4

to 3.



San Francisco had the game winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning

scoring 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. Glenn Adams opened up the inning

nicely when he drew a walk. Mike Sadek stepped into the batter's box and he

lashed a single. After another out, Gary Thomasson stepped up to the plate

and he hit a deep fly knocking in a run. Derrel Thomas stepped in and he

tripled giving San Francisco the victory as 5,714 happy fans celebrated

wildly. San Francisco had 10 hits overall, while Philadelphia had 6.



The win was credited to Randy Moffitt(1-1) who went 1 inning allowing 2 runs.

Tom Hilgendorf(2-2) was given the loss in relief. He allowed 2 runs and 2

hits in 2/3 of an inning.

Right fielder Dusty Baker had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the Atlanta Braves defeated

the Chicago Cubs by a score of 11 to 2 at Fulton Co Stadium.



Baker provided much of the offense. He laced a base-knock bringing in a run

in the 3rd inning, doubled plating a run in the 5th inning, laced a base-hit

in the 6th inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 8th of the

season) in the 8th inning. Atlanta finished with 15 hits while Chicago ended

up with 8.



The victory was credited to Phil Niekro(7-4) who went 8 and 2/3 innings,

allowing 2 runs. Ray Burris(3-7) was the losing pitcher. He was unable to

control the Atlanta offense and allowed 8 hits and 3 walks in 4 and 1/3

innings.

One run was the difference at Fulton Co Stadium as the Atlanta Braves defeated

the Chicago Cubs in 10 innings 3 to 2.



Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings. Atlanta won the

hard fought contest in the 10th inning. Darrell Evans delivered a one-base

hit. Cito Gaston got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Dusty

Baker then delivered a single. Mike Lum stepped in and he drew a walk to

load the bases. One out later, Vic Correll stepped in and he hit a single

making Atlanta the victors to the delight of the home town faithful. Chicago

had 10 hits in the game while Atlanta had 7, but Atlanta had the more timely

hits.



Tom House(2-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. Darold

Knowles(3-3) absorbed the loss in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning and

surrendered 3 hits and 1 walk.

Left fielder John Milner left the yard and had 2 RBI as the New York Mets

topped the Los Angeles Dodgers by a score of 4 to 2 at Dodger Stadium.



In the top of the 7th inning New York went on top for good scoring one runner

on 2 hits. Rick Baldwin pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 1st save.



The victory went to Jon Matlack(5-7) who went 8 innings, allowing 2 runs. The

losing pitcher was Don Sutton(5-7). He surrendered 5 hits and 3 walks in 6

and 2/3 innings.

Dock Ellis was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete

game and Rennie Stennett had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates

outscored the Houston Astros 3 to 1.



Ellis(5-1) pitched well for Pittsburgh in their victory. He was reached for 6

hits and 3 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 3.13 to 2.83.

Pittsburgh finished with 8 hits in the victory.



Dave Roberts(6-3) ended up with the loss. He pitched 7 innings giving up 6

hits and no walks.

Gary Nolan pitched 8 strong innings and left fielder George Foster had 3 base

hits as the Cincinnati Reds pulled out a win over the St. Louis Cardinals by

a score of 5 to 4 at Riverfront Stadium.



Cincinnati scored the deciding run in the 9th inning. After two outs Cesar

Geronimo was hit by a pitch. Foster next to the plate and he slapped a

one-base hit, and an error was also committed. Dan Driessen then ripped a

base-knock making Cincinnati the victor and beginning a joyous home town

celebration. For the game Cincinnati out-hit St. Louis 13 to 9.



Will McEnaney(3-2) allowed 3 runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Ron

Bryant(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He gave up 1 run and 1 hit in

2/3 of an inning.
