At Anaheim Stadium the Baltimore Orioles easily handled the California Angels

by the score of 7 to 3.



Baltimore promptly took the lead in their half of the first scoring one

runner. Ken Singleton drew a walk. Tom Shopay next to the plate and he laid

down a sacrifice bunt. Al Bumbry then singled scoring the run. Despite

losing, California out-hit Baltimore 12 to 9.



Ross Grimsley(2-6) went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Dyar

Miller got the save, his 1st. Nolan Ryan(1-9) took the loss. The Baltimore

ballclub's record now stands at 23-22. With the loss, California has a

record of 4-6 lately, 17-32, worst in the division overall.

13,599 fans were treated to a fine game at Metropolitan Stadium as only one

run separated the combatants at game's end. The Boston Red Sox won by the

slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.



Boston jumped on top to stay in the top of the 2nd inning scoring 2 runners on

3 hits. Minnesota made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push

the needed runs across.



Luis Tiant(7-4) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 8 innings. Roger

Moret earned the save, his 2nd. Jim Hughes(5-1) ended up with the loss. He

was knocked around by Boston, allowing 9 hits and 5 walks in 6 and 1/3

innings.



'I had a little blister on my index finger before the game, but I thought it

was nothing.' Tiant said. 'I was lucky I got a win because I couldn't put

the ball where I wanted it.'



CLEVELAND AT OAKLAND

Gaylord Perry pitched a 3 hitter and first baseman Tom McCraw had 3 base hits

at Oakland Co Stadium as the Cleveland Indians beat the Oakland A's 3 to

1.



Perry(7-5) had a strong outing. He allowed just 3 hits and 4 walks in 9

innings. After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score.



Sonny Siebert(2-1) was charged with the loss. Cleveland now has a record of

20-24. With the loss, the Oakland ballclub's record is 30-17.



KANSAS CITY AT MILWAUKEE

Steve Busby went the distance and first baseman John Mayberry lofted one into

the 'cheap seats' and had 3 RBI at County Stadium where the Kansas City

Royals beat the Milwaukee Brewers by the score of 8 to 2.



Busby(7-4) pitched a solid game. He allowed 7 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings.

Kansas City totaled 12 hits on the afternoon. Billy Champion(3-4) was given

the loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 4 runs in 3 and 2/3

innings.



'It felt really nice to get this win,' Busby said. 'I kind of dictated the

game. It's what I get paid to do. It worked out this time.'

The Milwaukee Brewers toppled the Kansas City Royals by a 5 to 1 score at

County Stadium.



In the bottom of the 4th inning Milwaukee scored 3 runs when they had 4 base

hits. They ended up being the winning runs. Milwaukee had 13 hits overall,

while Kansas City had 7.



Jim Colborn(1-3) went 5 and 2/3 innings allowing 1 run for the victory.

Colborn got help from Tom Hausman who was credited with his 3rd save. Al

Fitzmorris(4-6) was the losing pitcher. He was touched for 11 hits and 5

walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.



Milwaukee now has a record of 19-25. Jack McKeon was unhappy with his club's

recent performance. 'We can't keep losing games' he said. 'It gets to be

embarrassing after a while.'

Lenny Randle connected with a 'big fly' and had 2 RBI as the Texas Rangers

topped the New York Yankees by a score of 7 to 5 at Arlington Stadium.



Texas took the lead for good in the bottom of the 3rd inning when they tallied

2 runs on 1 hit. The key at-bat was by Randle who thrilled the crowd when he

lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 3rd of the season).

Texas rapped out 11 hits for the night.



Ferguson Jenkins(4-6) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings.

Rudy May(5-3) absorbed the loss. Texas now has a record of 25-22. With an

impressive recent record of 8-2, New York hopes this will only be an isolated

loss - followed by another nice run.

Bob Coluccio cracked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Chicago White Sox

defeated the Detroit Tigers by a score of 9 to 3 at Tiger Stadium.



Coluccio enjoyed a big day at the plate. He cracked a solo homerun in the 1st

inning, delivered a single in the 3rd inning, belted a three-run homer (his

3rd of the season) in the 6th inning and lined a one-base hit in the 7th

inning. Chicago had 14 hits for the afternoon.



Wilbur Wood(6-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 and 1/3 innings and

allowing 3 runs. Mickey Lolich(3-5) was given the loss. He allowed a few too

many baserunners giving up 12 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.



Coluccio was jubilant after the game 'Let me see a box-score' he joked, 'I

want to see how that game looks on paper.'

Jorge Orta left the yard and had 3 RBI as the Chicago White Sox defeated the

Detroit Tigers 7 to 5 at Tiger Stadium.



Orta had a big day against Detroit. He blasted a solo shot (his 4th of the

season) in the 1st inning, doubled scoring a run in the 2nd inning and

stroked a base-hit plating a run in the 8th inning. Chicago had 16 hits for

the game and Detroit had 8.



The win went to Claude Osteen(3-4) who allowed 3 runs in 5 innings. Rich

Gossage gained credit for his 7th save. Lerrin Lagrow(1-8) was tagged with

the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 14 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 2/3

innings.



The Chicago ballclub's record now stands at 26-20. With this loss, Detroit

has a 3-7 record of late, 14-28, worst in the division overall.
