Ken Holtzman pitched a complete game shutout at Oakland Co Stadium as the



ice-cold Detroit Tigers lost a heartbreaker to Oakland A's by the score of 1



to 0.







The game was won by Oakland with a run in the 9th inning. Billy Williams drew



a walk. Hopkins took off for second and slid in with a stolen base. Gene



Tenace was the next batter, but he struck out. Bert Campaneris came up and



he slapped a single resulting in an exciting win for Oakland and a wild



post-game celebration by the home town fans. Oakland finished with just 6



hits in the victory.







It was the 2nd shutout of the year for Holtzman(9-3). Joe Coleman(1-7)



suffered the loss. He gave up 1 run and 6 hits in 8 and 1/3 innings.

City Royals topped the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 2 to 1 at Memorial



Stadium.







Busby(9-4) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He gave up just 6 hits and



5 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 2.91 to 2.68. Despite losing,



Baltimore out-hit Kansas City 6 to 2.







Jim Palmer(8-4) was charged with the loss. He gave up just 2 runs and 2 hits



in 9 innings.

Ed Figueroa allowed Dick Williams to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game



and Tommy Harper had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the California Angels defeated the



Milwaukee Brewers by the score of 12 to 4 at Anaheim Stadium.







Figueroa(6-2) gave California a solid outing. He went 9 innings allowing 11



hits and 5 walks. California finished with 14 hits in the victory.







The loss was charged to Jim Colborn(1-4). He was knocked around by



California, allowing 6 hits and 3 walks in 2 and 1/3 innings.

George Medich came through with a solid 9 innings as the New York Yankees



defeated the Chicago White Sox 4 to 0 at Comiskey Park.







New York took the lead for good in the top of the 4th inning plating an



isolated run utilizing 2 base hits. New York had 8 hits for the afternoon.







For Medich(11-3) it was his 2nd shutout this year. Jim Kaat(6-4) was the



loser. He pitched 6 innings allowing 4 hits and 1 walk.

Cleveland Indians broke the deadlock in their last at bats, pulling out a 7



to 6 win over the Texas Rangers and sending their hometown fans home



smiling.







The deciding run was scored by Cleveland in the bottom of the 9th. After an



out was recorded, Rick Manning drew a walk. Manning swiped second base.



George Hendrick then laced a one-base hit giving Cleveland the win and



sending the home town fans into a frenzy. Texas had 15 hits in the game



while Cleveland had 11, but Cleveland had the more timely hits.







Fred Beene(2-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 4 and 1/3 innings.



Stan Thomas(2-3) took the loss in relief. He was knocked around,



surrendering 3 runs in 2 innings.

Jackie Brown(4-1) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 7 innings. Fritz



Peterson(1-7) ended up with the loss. He served up 4 gopher balls in 9



innings.

Steve Braun had 2 base hits at Fenway Park as the Minnesota Twins beat the



Boston Red Sox by the count of 3 to 2.







Minnesota had 2 runs cross the plate in the 7th inning. The critical plate



appearance was by Luis Gomez who silenced the stadium when he lashed a single



scoring two baserunners. Boston threatened in the 9th but their rally came



up short.







The win was credited to Dave Goltz(4-6) who went 8 innings allowing 2 runs.



Goltz was helped out by Bill Campbell who recorded his 4th save. Roger



Moret(0-2) was hit with the loss in relief.







With this win, Minnesota has a 27-22 record. They have been 5-5 lately. With



the loss Boston now has a record of 23-25.
