Right fielder Rusty Staub had 3 base hits and 3 RBI at Shea Stadium where the

New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves by the score of 13 to 4.



New York jumped out to the early lead in the first inning scoring one runner

on 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Felix Millan doubled. Joe Torre

stepped up next and he laced a base-knock, and an error was also committed,

scoring the run. New York lit up the scoreboard in the 4th inning with 6

runs on 7 hits. Atlanta was out-hit by New York, 22 hits to 5.



The win was credited to Tom Hall(1-1) who went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 4

runs. Buzz Capra(2-7) was the loser. He was knocked around by New York,

allowing 10 hits and 3 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.

Don Sutton took a no-hitter into the 7th inning at Veterans Stadium where the

Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4 to 1.



Sutton(5-6) was on top of his game. He allowed only 3 hits and 2 walks in 9

innings. The right-handed Sutton had his no-hit bid broken up by Dick Allen

who singled with two outs in the 7th inning. Los Angeles finished with just

6 hits in the victory.



The losing pitcher was Jim Lonborg(5-2). He pitched 6 innings giving up only

4 hits and no walks. Sutton was obviously very pleased with his performance

in the aftermath of the game, 'It was just one of those games where

everything worked. My arm felt great, heck, I could have pitched another two

or three innings. I only hope that I can do it again next time out!'

Right fielder Gary Carter had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the Montreal Expos

topped the San Diego Padres by a score of 9 to 5 at Jarry Park.



Montreal went ahead for good in the 6th inning scoring 3 runs using 2 hits.

After an out was recorded, Larry Lintz keyed the rally when he ripped a

base-knock. After another out, Pepe Mangual came up and he reached on an

error. Mike Jorgensen then clubbed a three-run home run (his 5th of the

season). Montreal had 9 hits for the afternoon.



The win went to Dave McNally(6-3) who allowed 5 runs in 8 innings. Joe

McIntosh(4-4) suffered the loss. Montreal scored big getting 8 runs off him

in 7 and 2/3 innings.



Montreal now has a record of 18-27. With the loss, the San Diego ballclub's

record is 25-28.

Rich Coggins had 4 hits as the Montreal Expos beat the San Diego Padres by a

score of 8 to 6.



Steve Rogers(5-5) was solid if not spectacular. He surrendered 5 hits and 9

walks in 6 and 2/3 innings. San Diego threatened in the 9th but Montreal was

able to put down the rally.



Rogers got help from Don Demola who was credited with his 2nd save. Dave

Freisleben(1-10) took the loss. He was touched for 10 hits and 3 walks in 5

innings.

John Candelaria went the distance and Richie Zisk had 2 base hits as the

Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the San Francisco Giants 8 to 1 at Three Rivers

Stadium.



Pittsburgh set the tone of the game in the first inning with 2 runs on 2 hits.

Rennie Stennett led off the inning for Pittsburgh when he stroked a one-base

hit. Richie Hebner stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk. After an out

was recorded, Willie Stargell stepped up to the plate and he delivered a

base-hit which scored a run. Dave Parker was up next and he hit a deep fly

scoring the final run of the inning. That early run support was enough for

Candelaria(1-0) and Pittsburgh. Both teams finished the game with 7 hits.



Ed Halicki(1-2) was given the loss. He gave up 4 hits and 3 walks in 6 and

1/3 innings.

Larry Demery had a strong outing as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the San

Francisco Giants 5 to 0 at Three Rivers Stadium.



Pittsburgh claimed the early lead in the first inning when they scored 2 runs

on 2 hits. That was all the runs Demery(3-1) needed. Pittsburgh managed 9

hits in their victory.



The losing pitcher was Charlie Williams(2-3). 'When Demery is on like that it

is a tough game to play, no doubt about it,' Wes Westrum said. 'He always

pitches well against us.'

In a thriller the St. Louis Cardinals staged a dramatic comeback then held on

to win over the Houston Astros by a score of 4 to 2 at The Astrodome.



St. Louis came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning with 3

runs utilizing 3 base hits. Willie Davis led off and keyed the rally when he

doubled. Reggie Smith stepped into the batter's box and he drew a walk. Ted

Simmons then singled plating a run. After an out was recorded, Ken Reitz

came to the plate and stroked a base-hit with two more runners crossing home.

St. Louis out-hit Houston for the game, 9 hits to 6.



The winning pitcher was Greg Terlecky(1-0) who allowed 1 run in 1 and 2/3

innings. Terlecky got help from Al Hrabosky who earned his 12th save. Joe

Niekro(1-1) was tagged with the loss in relief. He was knocked around pretty

good, giving up 3 runs in 2 innings.

Dan Driessen left the yard and had 2 RBI at Riverfront Stadium as the

Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 5 to 4.



Cincinnati jumped on top to stay in the bottom of the 6th inning scoring 2

runners on 2 hits. Chicago threatened in the 9th but their rally came up

short.



Gary Nolan(5-5) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 6 innings. Nolan was helped

out by Rawly Eastwick who recorded his 2nd save. Rick Reuschel(4-8) took the

loss. He surrendered 8 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.



'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his

best stuff,' Sparky Anderson said after the game. 'Nolan did not have

command of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew

how to pitch!'

The Cincinnati Reds easily topped the Chicago Cubs; the final score was 11 to

5.



Tony Perez enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He tripled which plated a run in

the 2nd inning, stroked a single in the 5th inning and tripled scoring two

baserunners in the 7th inning. Cincinnati kept the pressure on throughout

the contest as they scored in 6 different innings.



Rawly Eastwick(1-0) went 3 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the victory.

Geoff Zahn(2-4) was tagged with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 8 hits

and 3 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.
