Dave Parker launched 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Three Rivers Stadium as the



Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Atlanta Braves in 10 innings 4 to 2.







The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings. Pittsburgh won the game in the



10th inning. After two were out Willie Stargell initiated the scoring spurt



when he laced a one-base hit. Parker next to the plate and he lifted one out



of the park for a two run home run (his 15th of the season) giving Pittsburgh



the victory and sending the 37,608 home-town fans home happy. Pittsburgh



ended up with 10 hits for the game while Atlanta had 5.







Larry Demery(2-1) went 1/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the win. The loss



was charged to Max Leon(1-1) in relief. He surrendered 2 runs and 3 hits in



1 and 2/3 innings.

Bob Watson slammed a homerun and had 2 RBI at Veterans Stadium where the



Houston Astros beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9 to 6.







Houston scored 7 runs in the 7th inning when they had 6 base hits. The key



at-bat was by Cesar Cedeno who quieted the crowd when he stroked a one-base



hit scoring two baserunners. Houston totaled 14 hits on the afternoon.







The win went to Larry Dierker(7-4) who allowed 3 runs in 6 innings. Joe Niekro



gained credit for his 2nd save. Tom Underwood(4-5) ended up with the loss.







This win by Houston continues their recent hot streak. In their last ten



games, they have a record of 8-2. For the season, they are a division



leading 31-21. With the loss, Philadelphia has a record of 6-4 lately, 24-22



overall.

Jim Wynn had 2 base hits and 3 RBI and Burt Hooton completed the game without



help from the bullpen as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the slumping



Chicago Cubs 4 to 2 at Wrigley Field.







Los Angeles tallied 3 runs in the 7th inning. After an out was recorded,



Hooton was the sparkplug when he drew a walk. Davey Lopes came next and he



hit a single. Bill Buckner then drew a walk to load the bases. Wynn



followed and he doubled knocking home two runners. Steve Garvey stepped into



the box and would ground out scoring the final run of the inning. Los



Angeles had a total of 8 hits for the game.







The winning pitcher was Hooton(6-3) who allowed 2 runs for the game. Bill



Bonham(2-7) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 6 hits and 5 walks in 7



innings.

Alan Foster pitched a complete game at Shea Stadium as the San Diego Padres



beat the New York Mets by the count of 2 to 1.







Foster(2-2) looked very much in control throughout the day. He gave up just 9



hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 2.84 to 2.36. New York



had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.







Randy Tate(1-5) took the loss. 'We just made a lot of mistakes, mostly



mental,' Yogi Berra said. 'It's bad enough when the other team beats you,



but when you start beating yourselves, that's really bad.'







SAN FRANCISCO AT MONTREAL

Tim Foli had 2 base hits and 3 RBI as the Montreal Expos defeated the San



Francisco Giants by a score of 10 to 5 at Jarry Park.







In the bottom of the 4th inning Montreal scored 7 runs when they had 6 base



hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Foli who made the home-town



crowd a happy bunch when he doubled with all three runners coming home. San



Francisco was out-hit by Montreal, 18 hits to 9.







Dave McNally(5-3) went 8 and 2/3 innings allowing 5 runs for the victory. Mike



Caldwell(4-3) absorbed the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 9 hits and 5



walks in 3 and 1/3 innings.







Montreal now has a record of 15-26. With this loss, San Francisco has a 4-6



record of late, 18-28, worst in the division overall.

Joe Morgan had 2 base hits as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the St. Louis



Cardinals by the score of 7 to 3 at Busch Stadium.







Cincinnati came up with 3 runs in the 5th inning. After two were out Ken



Griffey started the rally when he stroked a base-hit. Morgan was next and he



reached on an error plating a run. Johnny Bench then cleared the fences for



a two-run home run (his 15th of the season). Cincinnati had 10 hits for the



afternoon while St. Louis had 7.







The winning pitcher was Jack Billingham(4-4) who allowed 2 runs in 6 innings.



Billingham got help from Pedro Borbon who earned his 2nd save. Bob



Forsch(8-2) was given the loss.







The Cincinnati ballclub's record now stands at 28-22. St. Louis has a record
