In a close game it was the Cincinnati Reds 6, the St. Louis Cardinals 4 at
Busch Stadium.
Cincinnati scored the decisive runs in a big 8th inning scoring 3 runs using 3
hits. Dave Concepcion led off and keyed the rally when he delivered a
single. Merv Rettenmund stepped up next and he drew a walk. After an out
was recorded, Cesar Geronimo stepped up to the plate and he lashed a single
bringing in a run. After another out, Pete Rose came to the plate and ripped
a base-knock scoring another run. Rose took second on the throw. Joe Morgan
stepped into the box and was walked intentionally to load the bases. Johnny
Bench did his part to keep things going and drew a walk scoring the final run
of the inning. Cincinnati had 13 hits for the night while St. Louis had 7.
Clay Kirby(2-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and allowing 3
runs. Rawly Eastwick recorded his 1st save. Mike Garman(1-3) was the losing
pitcher in relief. He got hit hard, allowing 5 hits and 3 walks in 2
innings.
