In a tight game it was the Chicago Cubs 4, the Montreal Expos 2 at Jarry
Park.

Chicago brought 2 runs across the plate in the top of the 6th inning when they
had 3 base hits. They would be enough to earn the win. Montreal could do no
damage in the bottom of the 9th.

Ray Burris(5-7) allowed 2 runs in 5 innings, and picked up the victory. Tom
Dettore recorded the save, his 4th. Fred Scherman(3-2) suffered the loss.
He got hit pretty hard, allowing 10 hits and 4 walks in 6 innings.

With this win, Chicago has a 31-37 record. They have been 5-5 lately.
Montreal has a record of 28-35 after the loss.

17,296 fans were treated to a fine game at The Astrodome as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Houston Astros halted a 7 game
slide and won by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.

Houston went ahead for good in the bottom of the 7th inning when they scored 2
runs on 3 hits. Houston finished with 8 hits in the victory.

The win was credited to Mike Cosgrove(1-0) who went 4 innings allowing no
runs. Burt Hooton(8-5) took the loss. He pitched 8 innings allowing 8 hits
and 3 walks.

First baseman Dick Allen had 3 base hits as the Philadelphia Phillies pulled
out a win over the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 4 to 3 at Veterans
Stadium.

The game was won by Philadelphia with a run in the 9th inning. Dave Cash drew
a walk. After an out was recorded, Bowa got a good lead and stole second.
Mike Schmidt then doubled making Philadelphia the victor and beginning a
joyous home town celebration. Pittsburgh was out-hit by Philadelphia, 10
hits to 4.

The victory went to Gene Garber(5-2) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. Dave
Giusti(1-4) was the loser in relief. He pitched 3 innings and surrendered 2
hits and 2 walks.

John Montefusco pitched a complete game and Steve Ontiveros left the yard and
had 3 RBI as the San Francisco Giants topped the San Diego Padres by a score
of 8 to 2 at Jack Murphy Stadium.

San Francisco scored 3 runs in the 4th inning with the help of 3 hits. Willie
Montanez led off and he drew a walk. Chris Speier followed and he lashed a
single. Gary Thomasson dug into the batters box next, but he struck out.
Ontiveros was up next and he lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his
1st of the season). San Francisco had 14 hits for the night.

Montefusco(5-6) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. Joe
McIntosh(5-6) ended up with the loss. He was unable to control the San
Francisco offense and allowed 9 hits and 4 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

The St. Louis Cardinals edged the New York Mets at Shea Stadium by the score
of 6 to 5.

Ron Reed(9-4) gave a fine effort for St. Louis. He went 7 innings
surrendering 10 hits and no walks. New York proved to be no trouble in the
bottom of the 9th.

Al Hrabosky gained credit for his 13th save. Hank Webb(2-1) was the losing
pitcher. He was knocked around by St. Louis, allowing 7 hits and 2 walks in
3 innings.

Del Unser had 3 base hits as the New York Mets beat the St. Louis Cardinals by
a score of 3 to 2.

New York scored the decisive runs in a big 8th inning with 2 runs on 4 hits.
Cleon Jones led off and started the attack as he laced a base-hit. After an
out was recorded, Felix Millan stepped in and he laced a base-knock. Unser
then ripped a base-knock knocking in a run. One out later, Ed Kranepool
stepped in and he doubled scoring the final run of the inning. Rick Baldwin
pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 2nd save.

George Stone(2-0) got the win allowing 2 runs in 8 innings. The losing pitcher
was Greg Terlecky(1-1) in relief. New York now has a record of 34-30. With
the loss, St. Louis has a record of 4-6 lately, 34-31 overall.
