WEB GEMS- Bot 8th: Johnny Bench blocked the plate, saving a run!
George Foster had 2 base hits at The Astrodome as the red-hot Cincinnati Reds
staged a comeback win over the slumping Houston Astros by the count of 7 to
5.
Cincinnati had the game winning rally in the 9th inning with 3 runs on 3 hits.
Foster led off and started the rally when he lined a base-hit. After an out
was recorded, Pete Rose came up and he ripped a base-knock. Ken Griffey then
drew a walk to load the bases. Joe Morgan followed and he hit a deep fly
bringing in a run. Johnny Bench stepped into the box and laced a base-knock
to load the bases. Wayne Granger then uncorked a pitch that was ruled a
passed ball bringing home one more runner. Tony Perez was next and he was
walked intentionally to load the bases. Jim Crawford then had one get away
for a wild pitch scoring the final run of the inning. Cincinnati won despite
being out-hit by Houston 17 hits to 7.
The victory was credited to Rawly Eastwick(2-0) who went 2/3 of an inning,
allowing 2 runs. Eastwick was helped out by Will McEnaney who recorded his
5th save. Granger(0-4) was hit with the loss in relief. He surrendered 3
runs and 3 hits in 2/3 of an inning.
Sparky Anderson was feeling mighty fine as he answered questions in his office
after the game, 'Now that was one fine ending! Did you see how the crowd just
sat there in silence after the winning run scored? Here we are celebrating
wildly, and the stadium is cloaked in virtual silence. Weird. but GREAT!'
