In a thrilling finish the San Diego Padres won in dramatic fashion coming back
to beat the Cincinnati Reds by the count of 5 to 4.
San Diego had the game winning rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs using 3
hits. After two outs John Grubb got things going when he doubled. Dave
Winfield came to the plate and laced a base-knock scoring a run. Mike Ivie
then doubled resulting in an exciting win for San Diego and a raucous
post-game celebration by the home town fans. For the game San Diego out-hit
Cincinnati 13 to 7.
Danny Frisella(1-0) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Clay
Carroll(0-1) was the loser in relief. Frisella and Grubb were really
whooping it up in the clubhouse after the great come from behind victory. As
John McNamara noted, 'A win like this one can do wonders for a team's
attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy - the fans, the players - even you guys
- it's better than winning by a dozen runs!'
