Wayne Twitchell was able to finish what he started and was credited with a

complete game at Veterans Stadium where the Philadelphia Phillies beat the

Chicago Cubs 7 to 3.



In the 6th inning Philadelphia went on top for good when they scored 2 runs on

3 hits. Philadelphia managed 13 hits in their victory.



The victory went to Twitchell(2-0) who went the distance allowing 3 runs. Ray

Burris(0-1) was hit with the loss. He was touched for 9 hits and 5 walks in

6 innings.

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Mets by a score of 8 to 4 at

Busch Stadium.



Mike Garman(1-0) got the win with a steady relief outing. He allowed 1 hit

and 1 walk in 1 inning. St. Louis ended up with 16 hits for the game while

New York had 6.



Al Hrabosky recorded his 3rd save. Bob Apodaca(0-1) suffered the loss in

relief. He allowed 9 hits and no walks in 1 inning.

Catcher Vic Correll homered and had 3 RBI as the Atlanta Braves defeated the

Houston Astros by a score of 7 to 4 at Fulton Co Stadium.



Correll had a good evening at the plate. He clubbed a three-run home run (his

1st of the season) in the 1st inning, doubled in the 4th inning and doubled

in the 7th inning. Atlanta had 12 hits for the night while Houston had 9.



Carl Morton(2-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 4

runs. Max Leon was credited with his 2nd save. Dave Roberts(0-1) was the

loser.

Larry Parrish hit 3 doubles and had 2 RBI and Chuck Taylor had a strong outing

as the Montreal Expos beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 7 to

5.



Montreal jumped on top to stay in the 5th inning with 2 runs on 3 hits. After

an out was recorded, Gary Carter kicked off the action when he delivered a

single. Barry Foote stepped up next and he stroked a base-hit. Parrish then

doubled bringing in two baserunners. The Pittsburgh bats were silent in the

bottom of the 9th.



The victory was credited to Dave McNally(2-1) who went 6 innings, allowing 5

runs. McNally got help from Taylor who was credited with his 1st save. Jerry

Reuss(1-1) was the losing pitcher. He got hit hard, allowing 11 hits and 5

walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.



'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' McNally said,

'this was one of those times.'

In a game for the baseball purist, Gary Nolan(1-0) and Andy Messersmith(1-2)

squared off in a tense pitching duel, Cincinnati Reds finally emerged

victorious over Los Angeles Dodgers, 3 to 1.



Cincinnati promptly took the lead in their half of the first scoring one

runner. After an out was recorded, Joe Morgan drew a walk. Morgan was safe

at second on a stolen base. Johnny Bench then laced a single scoring the

run. The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to

score again.
