Ross Grimsley blanked Boston in a very well-pitched complete game as the

Baltimore Orioles defeated the Boston Red Sox 2 to 0 at Memorial

Stadium.



Grimsley(1-0) looked very much in control throughout the day. He didn't give

up much, just 6 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. Boston went down without a

fight in the 9th.



Reggie Cleveland(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 8 innings giving up

only 3 hits and 2 walks.

Center fielder Bob Coluccio had 2 base hits at County Stadium where the

Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cleveland Indians 8 to 4.



Milwaukee came up with 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning when they had 3

base hits. The critical plate appearance was by Pedro Garcia who electrified

County Stadium when he rifled a three-run blast (his 1st of the season).

Milwaukee finished with 10 hits in the victory.



The victory was credited to Jim Slaton(1-0) who went 5 and 2/3 innings,

allowing 2 runs. Bill Castro was credited with his 1st save. Fritz

Peterson(0-1) took the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 9 hits and 2

walks in 6 innings.

12,547 fans watched an exciting game at Royals Stadium. The Kansas City

Royals topped the Minnesota Twins by the slimmest of margins, 6 to 5.



Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine innings. Kansas City came

out the victor in the 10th inning. After two outs George Brett laced a

base-hit. Rodney Scott followed and he drew a walk. Jim Wohlford then

smacked a single resulting in an exciting win for Kansas City and a raucous

post-game celebration by the home town fans. Kansas City won despite being

out-hit by Minnesota 14 hits to 10.



Doug Bird(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 4 and 1/3 innings and

allowing 2 runs. Tom Burgmeier(1-1) suffered the loss in relief.

The Oakland A's easily topped the Texas Rangers; the final score was 8 to

2.



Oakland set the tone of the game in the first inning as they scored 2 runs on

3 base hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Reggie Jackson who quieted

the home crowd when he doubled plating two runs. Texas was out-hit by

Oakland, 12 hits to 6.



The victory went to Vida Blue(2-0) who went 8 and 1/3 innings, allowing 2

runs. Ferguson Jenkins(0-2) absorbed the loss. He was unable to control the

Oakland offense and allowed 7 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.

Right fielder Buddy Bradford went deep and had 2 RBI as the Chicago White Sox

beat the California Angels in 10 innings by a score of 3 to 2.



The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings. Chicago won the game in

the 10th inning. Brian Downing laced a base-knock. Downing took his lead

and swiped second. Nyls Nyman then laid down a sacrifice bunt. After

another out, Bradford came to the plate and tripled scoring the run. Both

teams ended up with 6 hits on the afternoon.



Rich Gossage(2-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings. Don

Kirkwood(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief. He allowed 2 hits and no

walks in 1 inning.

Sparky Lyle was the victor at Shea Stadium as the New York Yankees beat the

Detroit Tigers in 13 innings by the count of 7 to 6.



The game was deadlocked at 6 after nine full innings. New York was victorious

in the 13th inning. After an out was recorded, Jim Mason reached on an

error. Walt Williams was next and he lined a one-base hit. Elliott Maddox

then doubled giving New York the win and sending the home town fans into a

frenzy. New York rapped out 14 hits for the afternoon.



Lyle(1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 3 and 2/3 innings. John Hiller(0-1)

was given the loss in relief. It was a tough loss for him as he did not

allow an earned run in his 4 and 2/3 innings of work.
