Grimsley(1-0) looked very much in control throughout the day. He didn't give up much, just 6 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. Boston went down without a fight in the 9th. Reggie Cleveland(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 8 innings giving up only 3 hits and 2 walks. The critical plate appearance was by Pedro Garcia who electrified County Stadium when he rifled a three-run blast (his 1st of the season). Milwaukee finished with 10 hits in the victory. The victory was credited to Jim Slaton(1-0) who went 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing 2 runs. Bill Castro was credited with his 1st save. Fritz Peterson(0-1) took the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 9 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings. The Kansas City Royals topped the Minnesota Twins by the slimmest of margins, 6 to 5. Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine innings. Kansas City came out the victor in the 10th inning. After two outs George Brett laced a base-hit. Rodney Scott followed and he drew a walk. Jim Wohlford then smacked a single resulting in an exciting win for Kansas City and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. Kansas City won despite being out-hit by Minnesota 14 hits to 10. Doug Bird(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 4 and 1/3 innings and allowing 2 runs. Tom Burgmeier(1-1) suffered the loss in relief. The crucial at-bat was provided by Reggie Jackson who quieted the home crowd when he doubled plating two runs. Texas was out-hit by Oakland, 12 hits to 6. The victory went to Vida Blue(2-0) who went 8 and 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs. Ferguson Jenkins(0-2) absorbed the loss. He was unable to control the Oakland offense and allowed 7 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.
