Second baseman Jorge Orta had 4 hits as the Chicago White Sox defeated the

Kansas City Royals by a score of 5 to 4 at Royals Stadium.



Stan Bahnsen(1-2) earned his pay with a solid performance for Chicago. He

allowed 7 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings lowering his ERA to 4.76.

Kansas City made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the

needed runs across.



Bahnsen was helped out by Cecil Upshaw who recorded his 1st save. Nellie

Briles(0-2) was the losing pitcher. 'Just one or two mistakes were all it

took to beat us today' Jack McKeon said. 'We take these games one day at a

time, but this one was hard to take.'



MILWAUKEE AT NEW YORK

Pat Dobson completed the game without help from the bullpen and right fielder

Bobby Bonds collected 2 extra-base hits and had 3 RBI as the New York Yankees

topped the Milwaukee Brewers by a score of 8 to 2 at Shea Stadium.



New York brought 4 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 6th inning. The

key at-bat was by Bonds who brought the crowd to their feet when he tripled

clearing the bases. New York totaled 13 hits on the afternoon.



Dobson(2-0) allowed 2 runs on the game. Jim Slaton(3-1) was the loser. He

allowed 6 hits and 5 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.

In a game for the baseball purist, Vic Albury(3-1) and Bill Hands(1-2) squared

off in a tense pitching duel, Minnesota Twins finally emerged victorious over

Texas Rangers, 3 to 1.



Albury delivered a fine performance for Minnesota. He was reached for 5 hits

and 4 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings. Texas threatened in the 9th but Minnesota

was able to put down the rally.



Bill Butler recorded the save, his 1st. Frank Lucchesi was in a contemplative

mood after the tough loss, 'It is really hard to lose this kind of a game.

It may seem weird to some, but it is easier to take the occasional blow-out

loss. It is the ones that just barely get away that hurt so much - like this

one!'

Gaylord Perry pitched a complete game as the Cleveland Indians defeated the

Baltimore Orioles in 10 innings by the score of 6 to 4 at Memorial

Stadium.



The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. Cleveland won the game in the

10th inning. George Hendrick kicked off the action when he doubled. Frank

Robinson came to the plate and drew a walk. Boog Powell then drew a walk to

load the bases. Rico Carty came up and he grounded into a double play.

Charlie Spikes stepped into the box and banged out a single, and an error was

also committed, which was good for two runs. Cleveland had 11 hits for the

night.



The win was credited to Perry(3-2) who went the whole way allowing 4 runs.

Jesse Jefferson(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief.

Right fielder Ken Singleton lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and Mike Torrez

pitched a complete game as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Cleveland Indians

by a score of 2 to 1.



Baltimore tallied 1 run in the bottom of the 7th inning. Baltimore and

Cleveland each finished the night with 6 hits. The winning pitcher was

Torrez(2-1) who allowed 1 run for the game. Dick Bosman(0-1) was given the

loss.

Frank Tanana reeled off a total of 13 strikeouts as the California Angels

outscored the Oakland A's 4 to 1.



Tanana(2-0) looked very much in control throughout the night. He gave up just

8 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.00 to 2.00.

California had a total of 9 hits for the game.



Ken Holtzman(3-1) was hit with the loss. 'Everything felt great' Tanana said.

'I had a good fastball, I felt I could throw it by everybody tonight.'

Bill Lee tossed a complete game at Tiger Stadium where the Boston Red Sox beat

the Detroit Tigers 5 to 3.



Boston came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th inning

scoring 2 runs utilizing 4 base hits. Bernie Carbo led off and started the

rally when he hit a single. Dwight Evans next to the plate and he laced a

base-hit. Carl Yastrzemski then lashed a single knocking in a run. Fred

Lynn struck out, unable to help the rally. Jim Rice followed, but he was set

down on strikes. Rico Petrocelli added to the outburst and stroked a

one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. Boston banged out 14 hits

on the afternoon.



The win went to Lee(2-2) who allowed 3 runs in the game. Ray Bare(0-1)

suffered the loss in relief. He pitched 2 and 1/3 innings giving up 5 hits

and 1 walk.
