In a lop-sided win the San Diego Padres scored 5 runs in the 10th inning and
ripped the Chicago Cubs by a 11 to 6 count.

Both teams were tied at 6 runs apiece after nine innings. San Diego won it in
the 10th inning. The highlight belonged to Dave Winfield who disappointed
the partisan crowd when he tripled with all three runners coming home. San
Diego had 15 hits overall, while Chicago had 12.

The victory was credited to Bill Greif(1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no
runs. The loss was charged to Oscar Zamora(0-1) in relief. He pitched 1
inning and surrendered 4 hits and 3 walks.

San Diego now has a record of 15-14. With the loss, Chicago has a record of
6-4 lately, 13-12 overall.

First baseman Bob Watson smacked 3 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Jarry Park as the
Houston Astros beat the Montreal Expos 6 to 3.

Watson was unconscious out there. While Montreal pitching was serving
softballs up there for him to hit, the Montreal fans were serving up some
hardball barbs when he entered the batter's box. But he just used it as fuel
for the fire. He smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 2nd inning, rifled a
three-run blast in the 4th inning, lined a single in the 6th inning and
lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 8th of the season) in the 8th inning.
Montreal had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Dave Roberts(3-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 3 runs. Roberts got help from Wayne Granger who earned his 6th save.
Woodie Fryman(0-5) was hit with the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 8
innings.

'It's almost like the ball was trying to hit my bat,' Watson said. 'Whenever I
would swing, the ball found the sweet spot.'

LOS ANGELES AT PITTSBURGH

Right fielder Dave Parker had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates
beat the Los Angeles Dodgers by a score of 4 to 3.

Pittsburgh brought 3 runs across the plate in the 4th inning. Willie Stargell
kicked off the action when he drew a walk. Richie Zisk stepped up next and
he reached on an error. Parker then doubled scoring two baserunners. Burt
Hooton then threw a pitch that the catcher muffed. Manny Sanguillen came to
the plate and reached on an error scoring the final run of the inning. Los
Angeles threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

The win went to Dock Ellis(3-1) who allowed 3 runs in 7 innings. Ellis got
help from Dave Giusti who was credited with his 1st save. The losing pitcher
was Hooton(3-1).

Despite losing Walter Alston was optimistic after the game. 'We'll get over
this one. Sometimes the breaks fall your way, sometimes they don't. Any one
of a dozen little things go different, and we come out on top.'

PHILADELPHIA AT ATLANTA

Tom Underwood(2-4) and Roric Harrison(3-2) treated the Atlanta fans to a fine
pitching duel at Fulton Co Stadium. The Philadelphia Phillies eventually
emerged as victors over the Atlanta Braves by the score of 3 to
0.

Philadelphia came up with all the runs they needed in the 2nd inning as they
scored 3 runs on 3 base hits. That was all Underwood needed. Neither team
managed to score after the 2nd inning.

Underwood was helped out by Gene Garber who recorded his 2nd save. The
winning ways continue for Philadelphia. They now have a record of 8-2 in
recent days. Atlanta has a record of 15-16 after the loss.

Lynn McGlothen tossed a complete game at Busch Stadium as the St. Louis
Cardinals won in their last at-bat beating the San Francisco Giants by the
count of 6 to 5.

The deciding run was scored by St. Louis in the 9th. After two outs Ken Reitz
doubled. Mike Tyson came next and he was walked intentionally. Luis
Melendez then stroked a single to load the bases. Lou Brock came up and he
drew a walk making St. Louis victorious to the delight of the the home town
crowd. San Francisco had 12 hits in the game while St. Louis had 7, but St.
Louis had the more timely hits.

McGlothen(2-3) was the winner allowing 5 runs for the game. Gary Lavelle(2-3)
was the losing pitcher in relief. He allowed 1 run and 3 hits in 2 and 1/3
innings.

The St. Louis ballclub's record now stands at 13-11. With the loss, the San
Francisco ballclub's record is 11-17, worst in the division.

The Cincinnati Reds had an easy time of it at Shea Stadium defeating the New
York Mets by a score of 8 to 2.

Pete Rose provided much of the offense. He smacked a single resulting in a
run in the 3rd inning and lofted a three-run bomb (his 2nd of the season) in
the 9th inning. For the game Cincinnati out-hit New York 11 to 8.

The victory went to Don Gullett(6-1) who went 8 innings, allowing 2 runs.
Randy Tate(1-2) was given the loss. He allowed 8 hits and 2 walks in 6
innings.
