The Baltimore Orioles put 4 runs on the scoreboard in the 2nd inning and edged



the Cleveland Indians in 10 innings at Municipal Stadium by the score of 8 to



7.







Both teams were tied at 6 runs apiece after nine innings. Baltimore was



victorious in the 10th inning. Lee May led off and started the rally when he



smacked a single. Bobby Grich got his chance to keep things going, but he



went down on strikes. Don Baylor then popped a two-run clout over the fence



(his 5th of the season). Cleveland had 16 hits in the game while Baltimore



had 12, but Baltimore had the more timely hits.







Wayne Garland(2-0) was the winner allowing 1 run in 2 and 2/3 innings. Jim



Kern(0-1) took the loss in relief. He gave up 2 hits and no walks in 1 and



2/3 innings.

Designated hitter Tony Solaita ripped 2 homeruns at Metropolitan Stadium as



the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 7 to 5.







Kansas City took the lead for keeps in the top of the 2nd inning when they



scored 3 runs on 3 hits. Kansas City rapped out 12 hits for the afternoon.







The win went to Paul Splittorff(2-3) who allowed 4 runs in 5 innings. Doug



Bird got the save, his 2nd. Bert Blyleven(3-2) was hit with the loss. He



was touched for 3 homeruns in his 7 and 2/3 innings of work.

In a two run game the New York Yankees got by the Milwaukee Brewers by the



score of 7 to 5.







In the top of the 2nd inning New York scored 3 runs with the help of 4 hits.



Chris Chambliss started the inning off right when he laced a single. Thurman



Munson came next and he lined a single. Ed Herrmann then lashed a single,



and an error was also committed, resulting in a run. Ed Sprague then threw a



pitch that the catcher muffed plating one more runner. Graig Nettles stepped



into the box and drew a walk. Jim Mason was a strikeout victim, unable to



help out. Sandy Alomar was next and he hit a deep fly scoring the final run



of the inning. Although they lost, Milwaukee did out-hit New York 16 to 9.







The victory was credited to Rudy May(2-2) who went 8 and 1/3 innings, allowing



4 runs. Sprague(0-1) suffered the loss. He was not very effective,



surrendering 5 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings.







'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his



best stuff,' Bill Virdon said after the game. 'May did not have command of



his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew how to



pitch!'

Steve Foucault came through with a solid 3 and one third innings at Arlington



Stadium where the Texas Rangers beat the California Angels 4 to 0.







Texas brought 3 runs across the plate in the 2nd inning when they had 3 base



hits. After an out was recorded, Mike Hargrove started the rally when he



laced a one-base hit. One out later, Joe Lovitto came up and he drew a walk.



Roy Smalley then delivered a single bringing in a run. Smalley took second



on the throw. Jim Sundberg followed and he doubled as another two runners



scored. That early scoring held up. After the 4th inning, neither team was



able to score.







Jackie Brown(2-0) went 5 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs for the victory.



Foucault earned his 1st save. Nolan Ryan(1-3) absorbed the loss. With this



win, Texas has a 10-11 record. They have been 5-5 lately. California has a



record of 8-15, worst in the division after the loss.

fought contest.







Oakland jumped on top to stay in the 2nd inning scoring one runner. Chicago



had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.







Ken Holtzman(4-1) allowed 2 runs in 7 innings, and picked up the victory.



Rollie Fingers recorded his 5th save. Claude Osteen(2-2) was tagged with the



loss.







'It's a disheartening loss, no question about it' said Chuck Tanner 'But we



have to get over it and get ready for the next game.'

They would prove to be the difference in the contest. Both teams ended up



with 8 hits on the afternoon.







Rick Wise(2-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 and 2/3 innings and



allowing 4 runs. Dick Drago recorded the save, his 2nd. The loss was charged



to Lerrin Lagrow(0-4). He surrendered 4 runs and 6 hits in 4 and 1/3
