score of 7 to 1.

Webb(1-0) dominated Montreal hitters. He allowed just 2 hits and 2 walks in 9

innings. New York finished with 10 hits in the victory.

Woodie Fryman(0-4) was the loser. He served up 3 homeruns in his 5 and 2/3

38,833 fans were treated to a fine game at Busch Stadium as only one run

separated the combatants at game's end. The St. Louis Cardinals won by the

slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.

St. Louis had the winning rally in the 8th inning with 2 runs utilizing 2 base

hits. After two outs Ron Fairly began the St. Louis spurt when he lined a

one-base hit. Keith Hernandez came next and he bombed a two-run dinger (his

1st of the season). Chicago had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.

John Curtis(1-0) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the win. Darold

Knowles(1-2) absorbed the loss in relief. 'We won because we did the little

things right.' Red Schoendienst said after the game. 'This is why we

practice things over and over and over, so when we get in close games we

don't make mistakes.'

The victory went to Tom Hilgendorf(1-1) who went 1 inning, allowing 1 run.

Dave Giusti(0-3) was tagged with the loss in relief.

McCovey provided much of the offense. He depressed the partisan hometown fans

with a grand slam home run (his 7th of the season) in the 1st inning and hit

a single in the 6th inning. San Diego totaled 9 hits on the night.

The winning pitcher was McIntosh(3-1) who allowed 2 runs for the game. Andy
