One run was the difference at Riverfront Stadium as the Atlanta Braves
defeated the Cincinnati Reds 3 to 2.
Atlanta scored 2 runs in the top of the 4th inning. Ralph Garr got things
going when he laced a one-base hit. Marty Perez came next and he laid down a
sacrifice bunt. Darrell Evans then smashed a two-run homer (his 4th of the
season). Cincinnati made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to
push the needed runs across.
The winning pitcher was Phil Niekro(3-2) who allowed 2 runs in 7 innings. Tom
House earned his 3rd save. The loss was charged to Don Gullett(5-1).
Sparky Anderson was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If
our guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that
one. That is what really ticks me off!'
