One run was the difference at Candlestick Park as the San Francisco Giants

defeated the Atlanta Braves 9 to 8.



Gary Lavelle(1-1) contributed a very nice performance in relief. He allowed

only 2 hits and 1 walk in 3 and 1/3 innings. San Francisco had 15 hits for

the game and Atlanta had 9.



Tom House(1-1) suffered the loss in relief. He pitched 2 innings and

surrendered 4 hits and 1 walk.

First baseman George Mitterwald had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Chicago Cubs

topped the Montreal Expos by a score of 3 to 2 at Wrigley Field.



Chicago did all of it's offensive work in the 4th inning scoring 3 runners on

3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Mitterwald who came through

for the home fans when he doubled plating two runs. Burt Hooton(1-0) got

relief help from Ken Frailing who was excellent in relief and gained credit

for his 1st save.



Dave McNally(1-1) was the losing pitcher. 'I had a little blister on my index

finger before the game, but I thought it was nothing.' Hooton said. 'I was

lucky I got a win because I couldn't put the ball where I wanted it.'

Center fielder Bake McBride jacked one out of the ballyard and had 2 RBI at

Veterans Stadium as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Phillies by

the count of 9 to 4.



St. Louis jumped on top of Philadelphia in the 6th inning when they scored 3

runs on 2 hits. St. Louis totaled 12 hits on the afternoon.



Bob Gibson(1-1) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 7 innings. Steve

Carlton(1-1) took the loss. He gave up 9 hits and 4 walks in 7 innings.

Larry Dierker went 7 and two third strong innings at The Astrodome where the

Houston Astros beat the Los Angeles Dodgers by the score of 3 to 1.



Houston came up with all the runs they needed in the 4th inning as they scored

3 runs on 3 base hits. The key at-bat was by Cliff Johnson who made the

crowd come alive when he cracked a two-run shot (his 2nd of the season). Los

Angeles was out-hit by Houston, 7 hits to 3.



The victory went to Dierker(2-0) who went 7 and 2/3 innings, allowing no runs.

Wayne Granger gained credit for his 2nd save. The loss was charged to Juan

Marichal(0-1).

San Diego Padres broke the deadlock in their last at bats, pulling out a 2 to

1 win over the Cincinnati Reds and sending their hometown fans home

smiling.



San Diego won the game with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Enzo

Hernandez delivered a single. Hernandez swiped second base. Bob Tolan then

lined a one-base hit. After an out was recorded, Mike Ivie came up and he

stroked a single resulting in a mighty exciting win for San Diego and the

39,746 home town fans in attendance. The teams had been locked in a

scoreless duel until the 6th inning.



Dave Tomlin(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing no

runs. Pedro Borbon(0-2) was given the loss in relief.
