Mickey Rivers had 3 base hits as the California Angels defeated the Boston Red
Sox in 10 innings 4 to 3 at Anaheim Stadium.

The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings. California came out the
victor in the 10th inning. Morris Nettles drew a walk. After an out was
recorded, Rivers stepped in and he tripled. Tommy Harper then laced a single
giving California the win much to the delight of the home town crowd.
Overall California out-hit Boston 12 to 7.

The victory went to Mickey Scott(1-1) who went 1/3 of an inning, allowing no
runs. Rick Wise(2-4) took the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners
giving up 12 hits and 6 walks in 9 and 1/3 innings.

With this win, California has a 10-19 record. They have been 3-7 lately.
With the loss, Boston has a record of 6-4 lately, 10-12 overall.

CHICAGO AT CLEVELAND

Gaylord Perry racked up an impressive total of 12 strikeouts and Buddy Bell
had 2 base hits as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Chicago White Sox by
the score of 7 to 1 at Municipal Stadium.

Perry(4-3) gave Cleveland a solid outing. He was stingy on the mound,
allowing just 7 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 2.61 to
2.39. Cleveland managed only 6 hits on the night.

Jim Kaat(2-3) was the loser. 'Everything felt great' Perry said. 'I had a
good fastball, I felt I could throw it by everybody tonight.'

MILWAUKEE AT KANSAS CITY

Al Fitzmorris pitched a complete game at Royals Stadium where the Kansas City
Royals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4 to 1.

Fitzmorris(3-2) had a strong outing. He gave up just 6 hits and 1 walk in 9
innings reducing his ERA from 5.27 to 4.50. The Milwaukee batters went down
meekly in the 9th.

The losing pitcher was Ed Sprague(0-2). He gave up 10 hits and 1 walk in 6
and 1/3 innings.

The Minnesota Twins edged the Baltimore Orioles at Memorial Stadium by the
score of 4 to 3.

Tom Burgmeier(2-1) looked good in relief and was the winning pitcher. He
didn't give up much, just 2 hits and no walks in 2 and 1/3 innings.
Baltimore could do no damage in the bottom of the 9th.

Ross Grimsley(1-2) was charged with the loss. He allowed 10 hits and 3 walks
in 7 and 1/3 innings.

Oakland A's broke the deadlock in their last at bats, pulling out a 2 to 1
win over the New York Yankees and sending their hometown fans home
smiling.

Oakland scored the deciding run in the 9th inning. Claudell Washington drew a
walk. Gene Tenace was next and he lined a single. Tenace took second on the
throw. Phil Garner then lashed a single making Oakland victorious to the
delight of the the home town crowd. The game was a scoreless duel until the
8th inning.

The victory was credited to Jim Todd(3-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no
runs. Sparky Lyle(2-1) suffered the loss in relief.

Oakland won for the 6th straight time. 'I'm glad to get the win', Todd said.
'We've got some good momentum going now.'

Roy Howell had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Texas Rangers topped the Detroit
Tigers by a score of 8 to 4 at Tiger Stadium.

Texas came up with 4 runs in the 2nd inning when they had 5 base hits. The
big moment was provided by Willie Davis who silenced the stadium when he
slapped a single plating two runs. Detroit threatened in the 9th but Texas
was able to put down the rally.

Jackie Brown(3-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 4 runs. Lerrin Lagrow(0-5) ended up with the loss. When questioned
about the loss, Ralph Houk said, 'The fans got to see an exciting game out
there tonight. Unfortunately, we couldn't get it done this time. Next time,
though, we'll be the clubhouse with all the smiles.'
